August 2004

Drew and I at Nina's third birthday--Pete's Candy Store, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. That was a beautiful, beautiful warm day, full with friends and family and fun times. I love that smile on his face and that look in his eye. Happiness comes from the inside out with him. He really felt it and you can see... The birthday parties are always a bit hard to pull off, but they always ended up being our favorite day of the year! Celebrating Nina together, celebrating being a family.

...as Julia mentioned getting Nina's birthdays organized was usually a bit rough around the edges, always with last minute running to and fro, an inevitable drew mess in the kitchen. Ha, i'm pretty sure one year we were not the first arrivals either, but they were always wonderful celebrations joyously carried out with tons of food and friends. I am lucky so lucky to have been at all 5 so far.

Drew usually designed a cool invite and made some culinary delight but I believe his favorite part of the parties was putting together the goody bags.

He would get really excited about the selection of the items making sure they reflected a bit more charm and character then your average children's goody bag. He was constantly vetoing ideas Julia and I threw out...Drew had a really specific vision for these kiddy bags. He really dedicated himself to this mission. It never failed, each year he would head out with Nina, carefully checking out the possibilities like tiny chinese tea cups, fans, yo-yo's and his all time favorite masking tape. His enthusiasm for this common household item could barely be contained as he described how long Nina could amuse herself with tape and how much she enjoyed it. It was really funny. Classic Drew. Sweet Drew.
